What I mean by that is that the research/concept phase can be broken up into 3 phases…
1/ The research. Where you’re actively looking for inspiration to create your next design.
When researching I have a few tools that I like to use, some paid, some free.
– Sorting Social (this is great for seeing what pins are being shared on pinterest)
– eRank (for seeing the trends, search volume and competition of keywords people are searching for)
– EtsyCheck (for uncovering new niches & opportunities)
– Google + Images (great for trendspotting as well)
2/ Once I have the inspiration. This could be 1 standalone idea from an image, meme, or quote or it could be a combination. Every time I find something that I think would lend itself well to what I’m working on I save it.
This is where the inspiration becomes the final phrase ready for design. Doesn’t need to be perfect, just needs to hit the cadence, flow & rhythm of what has sold in the marketplace. Every winner is easy to read & hits the emotions hard.
3/ The design. Not every new phrase needs a new design. Learn the fundamentals of great design & your design time is reduced significantly as you can start templating…
With each test (on Fb/Insta) only a small portion of the audience see’s your product & very few browse your store so changing up design is only adding an extra variable to your creation that doesn’t need to be there…
